  Volunteer Opportunities

As a supporter of SAAS, there are many ways you can assist the chapter leaders.
A few are listed below.  If you have time or
skills to offer, but don't see something of interest below, please contact our
Volunteer Coordinator, Pat Walters at 518-793-1960 or by email.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
  for American Kestrel Program
American Kestrel by Gordie Ellmers

American Kestrel populations across North America have been slowly declining for many years. In the last decade, however, the rate of decline has increased markedly.   Audubon New York, working with Audubon Chapters throughout the State, has formulated a plan to help restore kestrel populations within our State.

In our chapter this will involve the placing of 10 kestrel nesting boxes and monitoring the boxes weekly. Volunteers will be needed to help put up some boxes. Volunteers will also be needed to monitor the boxes. For more information about the program or to volunteer to help monitor the boxes, call Pat Fitzgerald at 518-792-6846 or contact her by email.

Program Committee

Are you a nature photographer or artist specializing in natural subjects?  Do you chase birds or butterflies?  Do you study wildflowers, insects, snakes?  If so, or if your passion is for any other natural history subject, we would love to hear from you and offer you the opportunity to share your knowledge with the community by presenting a program at one of our monthly meetings.

We are always looking for new ideas for our public programs.  If you have a special interest on which we have not yet presented a program, please let us know, and we will try to fill that need.

Please contact Linda White at 518-792-4446 or by email

Field Trip Committee

Are you an amateur nature watcher?  The chapter is always in need of those willing to lead field trips.  No need to be an expert!  Anyone with a love of the outdoors, or a basic knowledge of any natural history subject, can assist in this way.  Sharing your interest and meeting other members is a fun way to spend some time!

Other ways you can help with field trips:

  • Work with Committee Chair to suggest and secure new field trips.
  • Assist with emailing the schedule of new field trips to past field trip participants to encourage participation.
Please contact us by email

Publicity Committee

A small amount of time spent on any of the duties listed below would be of great help to our Publicity Chairperson.  Here are a few ways you could help:

  • Assist with design of posters for our monthly programs.  A familiarity with Microsoft Word and/or Microsoft Publisher would be helpful.
  • Assist with writing and distributing press releases for select programs/events throughout the year.  Experience writing press releases helpful but not required.
  • Assist with the distribution of posters for our monthly programs in Glens Falls and the surrounding areas.

Conservation Committee

There are many ways you can be of help to the Conservation committee; a few are:

  • Our chapter area is huge – all of Warren and Washington counties, plus the northern part of Saratoga county.  Our presence is sometimes required at a town board, planning board, or public meeting to address a conservation issue.  Your help in attending selected meetings, with or without conservation chair, and with taking notes or preparing reports, would be a valuable asset.  Availability on weeknights would be helpful.
  • Volunteers are also needed to assist with the preparation of letters to town boards, planning boards, officials, etc.  Letters would be reviewed/edited by SAAS board.  Letter writing experience would be helpful but is not required.  Time commitment:  4-6 hours, 2-3 times throughout year.
  • Assist conservation chair in drafting letters to the editors of local newspapers. Letters would be reviewed/edited by SAAS board.  Letter writing experience helpful but not required.
  • There are always opportunities to assist with bird monitoring projects throughout the year. Bird identification skills, although helpful, are not required.  Sighting the birds and the recordkeeping are as important as identification!
  • Volunteers are needed to join SAAS board members as they travel to Albany each spring for “Earth Day Lobby Day.” This our chance to speak with government representatives about environmental issues.  No experience is necessary, training is provided.

Budget Committee

Help is always needed in assisting the treasurer and budget committee in preparing annual budget.  Experience in Microsoft Excel helpful but not required.

Please contact Jason Goldsmith at 518-480-4243 or by email

Fundraising Committee

Without this valuable committee, our chapter could not afford to offer public programs, camp sponsorships, field trips, etc.  Ways you can assist with keeping our budget healthy are:

  • Selling raffle tickets at programs or events.
  • Soliciting donations from businesses or individuals.
  • Assisting with grant writing.

 Bylaws Committee

A volunteer familiar with bylaws – or 501(c)(3) legalities– would be very helpful in reviewing the bylaws for accuracy and legality.
